Biography

Juhayman al-Utaibi was born on September 16, 1936 in the village of al-Sajir in the Saudi province of Al Qasim , in which representatives of the Utaiba tribe lived . The name given to Juhayman at birth comes from the verb “look dark” [1] . Many fellow tribesmen of Juhayman al-Uteibi, including his father and grandfather (was killed), participated in the battle of Sabil during the Ihwan uprising against the Saudi king Abd al-Aziz.

From 1955 to 1973, Juhayman al-Uteibi served in the ranks of the National Guard of Saudi Arabia . Then he moved to Medina and began to study at the local Islamic University , where he met Muhammad al-Kakhtani . In the late 1970s, Juhayman moved to Riyadh , where he attracted the attention of the Saudi secret services. He and about a hundred of his followers were arrested in 1978 after a demonstration against the monarchy, but were released after they were interrogated by Abdul-Aziz ibn Baz and found them harmless.

On November 20, 1979, Muhammad al-Kakhtani, Juhayman al-Uteibi and about five hundred other terrorists seized the Muslim Mosque, a sacred sanctuary in Mecca. During the assault on the captured mosque, Muhammad al-Kakhtani was killed, and Juhayman and the remaining 68 terrorists were arrested and then sentenced to death.
