Monument History

The procession at the monument on the 20th anniversary of the Khojaly tragedy. February 26, 2012

After the tragedy in Khojaly, at the place where the monument is today, a small sculpture of a mother was installed with a dead child in her arms. Later, the leadership of the Khatai district decided to increase the size of the sculpture. The leadership of the executive branch of the district addressed an order to the architect Jamal Rashidalizade and sculptors: Aslan Rustamov, and his sons Mahmud and Teymur Rustamov. Thus, a family of sculptors was involved in the reconstruction of the monument [1] .

After the installation of the new monument, its height was 8.6 meters. According to Teymur Rustamov, “it was necessary in one composition to depict the whole tragedy of the Khojaly night, its horror,” and “a woman with a dead child played a key role in it”. Thus, the essence of the composition has been preserved. The opening of the monument took place on the 16th anniversary of the tragedy, February 26, 2008 [1] .
