Monument

The monument is made of bronze and stone and is a portrait of a Vietnamese politician Ho Chi Minh against the background of the symbolic sun . In front of the disk of the sun is a sculpture of a Vietnamese who rises from his knees. On the back of the sun disc are tropical flowers and two bamboo trees. The composition is mounted on a round plate. The words of Ho Chi Minh are inscribed on a pedestal: "There is nothing more precious than independence, freedom . "

History

The Ho Chi Minh Monument was erected on May 18, 1990 in the square named in his honor in 1969.

The authors of the monument are sculptor V.E. Tsigal and architect R. G. Kananin .

After the collapse of the USSR , the Moscow authorities had a desire to demolish the monument [1] , which caused protests from Vietnamese diplomats who, with such a development of events, suggested moving the monument to the territory of the Embassy of Vietnam in Moscow [1] . As a result, the monument was left in its original place.

Opinions on the Monument

Opinions about the Ho Chi Minh monument differ.

Some people ironically call it “a monument to a flying saucer ” for its unusual appearance for the monuments . Those who do not know who Ho Chi Minh are, call it “a monument to the centenary of the Tatar-Mongol yoke ” [1] .

However, for the friends of Vietnam — the Soviet military specialists who worked in Vietnam during the Vietnam War — this is the place where they meet on Ho Chi Minh’s birthday on May 19 at exactly 10 a.m., without an invitation and reminder, get together annually [2] .

Also, the Ho Chi Minh monument is quite popular with Vietnamese in Moscow , and Vietnamese weddings often come here [3] .

Rewards

  • The sculptor Vladimir Tsigal for the creation of the Ho Chi Minh monument in Moscow was awarded the Vietnamese Order of Friendship [4] .
