History and Description
The picture shows an elderly man sitting with his hands folded calmly in front of him - the fingers of his hands are visible at the bottom of the picture. It is believed that this portrait was a diptych with the " Portrait of an Elderly Woman " (his wife), which is currently in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston [2] . This assumption was first expressed by art critic Jack Schrader in 1970 [3] .
Until 1895, "Portrait of an Elderly Man" was in a private collection in England. In 1895, it was sold to Albert von Oppenheim from Cologne , who died in 1912. In 1912, the painting was sold for 82 000 dollars to businessman and collector from New York Benjamin Altman ( Benjamin Altman ) [1] . Benjamin Altman died in 1913, bequeathing his collection to the Metropolitan Museum [4] [5] , in which, in addition to this picture, there were other Memling works - portraits of Tommaso di Folco Portinari [6] and Maria Maddalena Portinari [7] .
This is not the only picture of the artist with this name - Memling's other painting “Portrait of an Elderly Man”, painted in 1470-1475 and stored in the State Museums of Berlin, is also known [8] .
