Sweden Car Number Index

Car numbers in Sweden consist of three letters and three numbers. The combination is consistent and has no connection with the geographical location, although the last figure shows in which month the car should undergo inspection . Vehicles such as police cars, fire engines, buses, and trolleybuses use the same type of license plate number as private cars. Military vehicles have special plates.

Description

The plate has black text on a white background. It consists of three letters, a space, then three numbers. This space is used for the sticker when the machine was registered. All vehicles must have front and rear license plates, with the exception of motorcycles, trailers (rear only), tractors and other off-road equipment (front only).

The registration number is associated with the vehicle identification number (VIN) and remains unchanged even after a change of ownership until the vehicle is disposed of or registered in another country. A deducted vehicle is not subject to road tax or may not be insured. The license plate remains on the vehicle during operation.

The only way to encode is when the vehicle must pass the test. The last digit of the plate indicates the month of verification. Cars in Sweden are not tested in May and June. This is to reduce the number of inspections during the summer months. A car that has not passed the test within a period of time is refused a technical inspection and is not allowed to drive on public roads.
