Game career
He started playing football in Kiev in 1927 for the teams Vodnik and Zheldor , which at that time were considered the best both in the city and in Ukraine and were the basis of the Kiev team in the championships of Ukraine and the USSR.
In the pre-war time, he played for the teams of Kharkov , Volgograd , Minsk , Ivanovo [1] .
He graduated from the Kiev College of Physical Education (1933-1937), 4 courses of the Faculty of History of Kiev University. T. G. Shevchenko (1938-1941). Member of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 .
Coaching career
In the post-war period, he was simultaneously a player and coach of Kherson Spartak , coach of Kirovograd Torpedo [2] (with whom he won the USSR Cup in 1953), Rivne Avangard , and second coach of Vinnytsia Lokomotiv (1959) [3] . In 1960 he was appointed head coach of the " Collective Farmer " - Cherkasy team of masters of class "B". He replaced Abram Lerman , who was invited that year to manage the newly created Kiev Arsenal .
Subsequently, Nikolai Zavorotny was invited to other Ukrainian teams of masters - “ Miner ” [4] , “ Vanguard ” ( Yellow Waters ) [5] , “ Prometheus ”. Several times he returned and again led the Cherkasy team. So, in the seasons of 1969-1971, and in the season of 1973 he assisted Vitaliy Khmelnitsky, formerly famous left-handed forward of Dynamo Kyiv, to the honored master of sports. Then Cherkasy " Granite " won the final tournament with the participation of the 6 best teams of physical education teams in Ukraine and again won the right to represent Cherkasy among the teams of masters of the II league.
The title The Honored Trainer of the Ukrainian SSR was awarded for the successful performance of the Avangard team ( Yellow Waters ), which became the champion of Ukraine among the teams of Class B masters and won the right to speak in Class A of the All-Union Championship (Group II) in 1966 [6] .
He was considered a strong psychologist coach, from mediocre players he raised strong personalities who were in demand in many teams and later, after passing his coaching school, they themselves became trainers. There were many such players, among them Yevgeny Kucherevsky , an outstanding coach of Dnipropetrovsk Dnipro, who at one time played in the Avangard team ( Yellow Waters ) under the leadership of Nikolai Zavorotny.
Zavorotny Tournament
The tournament of his memory has been held since 1987, which was organized by the regional football federation. The best football teams of the region participate in this tournament, and teams from other regions of Ukraine and Russia are also invited [7] [8] [9] .
