Biography

Richard Sumner Cowan was born in Crawfordsville , Indiana . He was educated in Florida , but in 1938 he returned to Indiana and in 1942 graduated from Wobash College with a bachelor's degree. In 1943-1945, Cowen served in the U.S. Navy in the Mariana Islands . In 1946, Cowan became an assistant to Harold St. John at the University of Hawaii . Subsequently, this university awarded Richard Sumner a master's degree for his work on the genus Neraudia .

Since 1948, Cowan worked as an assistant to Basset Maguire in the New York Botanical Garden . In 1952, Columbia University awarded him a Ph.D. for his dissertation on the genus Macrolobium . Since 1957, Richard worked at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington . In 1959, Cowan was on an expedition to the West Indies , in 1962 - in British Guyana . Then he became an assistant director of the National Museum of Natural History, from 1965 to 1972 he was deputy director. From 1975 to 1980, Cowan was the first editor-in-chief of the bean bag newspaper, dedicated to legumes. In 1985, Richard Sumner retired.

In 1986, R. S. Cowan moved to Perth . He began to study the local species of acacia for a monograph of the continental flora. In July 1997, he suffered a stroke, but in September received a serious head injury and died on November 17 .
