Biography
Stanley Kyunits was born into a family of Jewish immigrants from the town of Yasvoyni of the Coven Hernery (now Lithuania ). [1] Graduated with honors from Harvard University in 1926 . He made his debut in the collection of poems “Intellectual Things”, but editorial activity brought the first recognition. Stanley Kyunits compiled the reference editions Modern Writers (Living Authors, 1931), Writers Today and Yesterday (Authors Today and Yesterday, 1933), 19th Century English Writers (British Authors of the Nineteenth Century, 1936), American writers: 1600-1900 "(American Authors: 1600-1900, 1938)," Writers of the 20th Century "(Twentieth Century Authors, 1942).
In 1943 he was drafted into the Army, after the service he was engaged in teaching activities; taught at the University of Washington , at Columbia University , etc.
The book of poems "Selected Poems", published in 1958 , brought Kunitz fame as a poet and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize .
In 1967, Kyunitz traveled to the USSR . He translated poems by A. Akhmatova , A. Voznesensky , E. Evtushenko . The poet was among the founders of the movement against the Vietnam War .
Since 1969, he has been editing the Young Voices series, published by Yale . Since 1974, Stanley Kyunitz has been a poetry consultant at the Library of Congress . One of Kunitz’s most critical works is an essay book about prominent American poets, “Not That Order, Not That Madness” (A Kind of Order. A Kind of Folly, 1957).
Stanley Kunitz’s poems have been translated into many languages, including Russian , Dutch , Swedish , Macedonian , French , Japanese , Arabic , etc.
