Konstantin Mikhailovich Vertelov ( November 18, 1923 - January 3, 1997 ) - Soviet military leader, Colonel-General of the Soviet Army . Hero of Socialist Labor ( 1978 ), Honored Builder of the RSFSR , laureate of the Lenin Prize , State Prize of the USSR and Prize of the Council of Ministers of the USSR .

Biography
Early years
Born November 18, 1923 in the city of Isilkul in a working-class family. In 1926, the Vertelova family moved to Chelyabinsk . He studied at school 121 , graduated in June 1941 [1] .
During the Great Patriotic War, he worked as a draftsman, design engineer, and then as a leading technologist in the department of the chief technologist at the cartridge plant No. 541 in Chelyabinsk [1] .
From November 1944 to December 1945, he studied at the Chelyabinsk Mechanical Engineering Institute, then worked as head of the tools and equipment department at the Chelyabinsk office of the Main Supply Directorate of the Ministry of Heavy Engineering of the USSR [1] . In 1949 he graduated from the Sverdlovsk Mining Institute with a degree in mining engineering [1] .
From July 1949 - Chief Engineer of the Capital Construction Department of the Theological Mine Administration of the Uralrud Trust in the city of Krasnoturinsk . From January 1950 to August 1951 - Deputy Director of the Sverdlovsk Mining Institute [1] .
In September 1951, he began work on building number 514 of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs , was the head of the section, then the chief engineer of the 2nd mining district. From April 1952 - the chief engineer, and from September next year - the head of the mining and construction department [1] .
In April 1954, he became the chief engineer of the Construction Department No. 514 of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs, which was responsible for the construction of the State Union Plant No. 418 for the production of nuclear weapons in Sverdlovsk-45 . From September 1954 - Chief Engineer of the Copper Mine Construction Department (Chelyabinsk-39) [1] .
In the USSR Armed Forces
In March 1956 he began service in the Armed Forces of the USSR [1] . In October 1958, he became Chief Engineer, and in March 1960, Head of the Military Construction Department of the copper mine. After the final completion of construction, he was transferred to the 526th Military Building Directorate. Participated in the construction of the so-called " Star City ". Tasks were completed in a short time [1] .
In August 1965, he was appointed chief engineer of the Main Directorate for Special Construction of the USSR Ministry of Defense, five years later he became deputy head of the department, and in February 1971 he headed it [1] .
As chief of Glavspetsstroy, he dealt with serious issues, participated in the development of a communications system and command of the army in case of war, and the construction of special facilities. He personally supervised the construction of uranium mining enterprises, the construction and rehabilitation of objects destroyed during tests at the nuclear Semipalatinsk test site [2] .
During one of the tests as a result of an abnormal launch, a nuclear explosion occurred at a depth of 3 kilometers in the mine. At that moment, Vertelov and other employees of the Main Directorate examined the concreted head of the mine. No one was injured in the explosion [1] .
October 28, 1976 Konstantin Mikhailovich was given the rank of lieutenant-general [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 21, 1978, Vertelov was awarded the title Hero of Socialist Labor [1] .
In May 1979, Vertelov was appointed first deputy chief of construction and quartering of troops of the USSR Ministry of Defense [1] .
October 30, 1981 Vertelov was awarded the title of " Colonel-General-Engineer " [1] .
In October 1985, Colonel General Vertelov took the post of head of the State Expertise and Inspection of the USSR Ministry of Defense [1] .
In 1991 he resigned. He served as vice president of the International Conversion Fund [1] .
Had 19 copyright certificates for various inventions to improve communication and control systems [3] .
He died on January 3, 1997 in Moscow . He was buried at the Kuntsevo cemetery [1] .
Awards
Awarded a number of state and departmental awards, among them:
- Hero of Socialist Labor (Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 21, 1978 , Order of Lenin and the Hammer and Sickle Medal ) - for successfully completing tasks for the construction of defense facilities ;
- Three Orders of the Red Banner of Labor (August 29, 1969, July 2, 1974, March 3, 1987) [1]

Memory
On the building of the Chelyabinsk school number 121 , where Vertelov studied, according to the Order of the Administration of the city of Chelyabinsk of November 2, 2010 No. 8053 "On the installation of a memorial plaque to Vertelov KM", a memorial plaque was installed [1] . A plaque was also installed on the house in which the general lived [1] .
