According to the legends of ancient genealogists, the offspring of Fyodor Ivanovich Shevlyaga, brother of Andrei Ivanovich Kobyla , the ancestor of the reigning Romanov family, Sheremetevs and others. One of the sons of Fedor Shevlyaga, Timothy Motovilo , was the founder of the Motovilovs and the Robbers. Nikita Motovilov was a clerk (1566). In the XVII century many Motovilovs were stewards and solicitors.

The Motovilov clan was divided into two branches, included in the VI and II parts of the genealogy books of the Yaroslavl, Saratov and Simbirsk provinces.
