Biography
A source about Tatyana in Russia is the saint’s life, written by Dmitry Rostovsky in the 17th century [1] . According to Dmitry Rostovsky Tatiana lived in the III century, was born in Rome in a rich and noble family (father was a consul three times). Her parents were Christians and raised their daughter in piety. Upon reaching adulthood , Tatiana decided not to get married. Dimitry of Rostov reports that for her virtuous life she was staged as a deaconess .
Dmitry Rostovsky writes that under the emperor Alexander North (reigned from 222 to 235 years ) Tatiana was captured and brought to the temple of Apollo , where they tried to make her worship the statue of this god. According to Dmitry Rostovsky, Tatiana offered a prayer to Jesus Christ , and the earthquake destroyed the statue of Apollo and brought down the part of the temple, under which many people died.
After this, Tatiana was tortured, but traces of torment disappeared from her body. During torture through prayer, four angels and a voice from heaven turned to Tatiana appeared to the holy tormentors. These miracles made the tormentors believe in Christ. Tatiana’s life tells us that after the conversion, her tormentors themselves were executed.
[2] "The judge began to convince the holy virgin to offer a sacrifice to idols, but his efforts remained in vain.
The judges, having decided that Tatiana was engaged in magic by means of her hair, sheared them and locked her for two days in the temple of Zeus . On the third day, the priests, having come to the temple to make a sacrifice to Zeus, found his statue broken, and Tatiana alive. After that, she was sentenced to death and, together with her father, was truncated with a sword (in other words, their heads were chopped off). The martyrdom of Tatiana occurred on January 12, 226 .
Saint Tatyana, as a martyr of the first centuries of Christianity, is revered both in the Orthodox and Catholic churches, however, her worship was widely spread only among Eastern Christians. In the West, the name Tatyana is considered Russian and is used only in some, for the most part Slavic, countries.
Where did Dmitry Rostovsky get information about Tatyana?
About Alexander North and his religious views are briefly written in the Orthodox Encyclopedia [3] .
The Orthodox encyclopedia says: "Unlike the predecessor prone to despotism, A. S. strove to restore the prestige and competence of the Roman Senate. The religious syncretism characteristic of the rule of the Severs reaches its apogee under A. S., expressed, in particular, in the tolerant attitude towards Jews and Christians (Scr. Hist. Aug. Vita AS XXII 4).
Eusebius of Caesarea reports many Christians at court and in the family of A. S. (Euseb. VI 28). Julius African dedicated to A. S. his "Embroidered Belts" (Κέστοι), and St. Hippolytus - works on the resurrection. In Antioch, Origen was given an audience with A. S. and Julia Mammea. In the home church of A.S., perhaps, there was an image of Christ along with images of Apollonius of Tyana, Abraham, Orpheus and others (Vita AS XXIX 2).
In the Palatine Palace and in public buildings, he ordered to put the saying he heard from Christians: “Do not do to another what you do not want for yourself” (Vita AS LI 7-8; cf. Mt 7, 12; Lk 6, 31). In the light of such evidence, reports of later acts about the martyrdom of Saints Cecilia, Popes Urban I, Calixtus I, Kaloped and Asterius, Martina are unlikely to be in the reign of A.S. In the war with Persia (232) A.S. personally led the army, stopping the advance of the Sassanids to Mesopotamia. During a campaign in Germany (234 - early 235), he and his mother fell victim to the rebellion raised by Bud. imp Maximin " [4] .
Tatyana's Day
After the decree on the opening of Moscow University was signed on January 12 (23), 1755 by Empress Elizaveta Petrovna , Tatyana’s day was celebrated annually (now it is January 25 in a new style) [5] first as the University’s birthday, and later as a holiday all students.
