Biography
Sophus Bugge was born into the family of a merchant. He was educated at universities in Christiania (now Oslo), Copenhagen and Berlin . In 1857 he defended his master's thesis, in 1866 he was appointed professor of comparative linguistics and Old Norwegian at the University of Christiania. His scientific studies were devoted to runic texts, collecting Norwegian folk songs, as well as the study of Celtic, Etruscan and other languages.
His main work is the publication of Edda under the title: " Norroen fornkvaedi " (1867). In addition, he published the following works: " Garnie norske Folkeviser " ("Old Norwegian Folk Songs", 1858), excellent editions of the Salsa of Welsung and Gerfarr under the title " Narroene Skrifter af Sagnhistorisk Inhold " (1864-1865); several important works on runes, especially Tolkning af Runemdskriften paa Rökstenen i Oesterg ö tland (in Antikvarisk Tidskrif for Sverige , Volume 5); then the publication of Plautus (1867) and “ Ancient Italian Etudes ” (Christiania, 1878). His sketches on the origin of the sagas, on the Norse gods and heroes are published in German Brenner: " Studien über die Entstehung der nordischen Götter - und Heldensagen " (Munich, 2 volumes, 1881 and 1882). In his works, he adhered to a comparative method.
