Content
Story
The film begins with a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche 's concept of eternal return. The script of the film by Jean Cocteau is a variation on the theme of the romantic tragedy of Tristan and Isolde . The film was moved to a modern time for the creators of the picture - the first half of the 20th century - in an unknown European country. A wealthy middle-aged widower Mark lives in a secluded gloomy castle . The castle also houses the family of Mark's late wife's sister: Gertrude with her husband and their only son, Achilles, is an ugly and vicious dwarf at the age of 24. Once, a nephew, a young, cheerful and handsome Patrice, comes to visit Mark. The young man offers his uncle to marry again and goes in search of the bride. In the nearest village, Patrice rescues the beautiful girl Natalie from drunken hooligans. The girl dreams of breaking out of the environment in which she lives, and agrees to marry a stranger. Dwarf Achilles spies on all the inhabitants of the castle, adjusting intrigues. Patrice and Natalie fall in love with each other, Mark feels betrayed and betrayed. A series of events leads lovers to suffering and separation, and in the final film to death.
