The chapel of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is an Orthodox chapel in Taganrog . Built in Uprising Square , in front of the Old Railway Station , in 2012 .

History
On the territory of the Taganrog railway station , on the platform side, in 1908, a chapel was built at the expense of the railway workers to commemorate the birth of his Imperial Majesty the sovereign, heir to the prince, Prince Alexei Nikolayevich [1] . This chapel was destroyed in 1920 [1] .
They decided to build a new chapel on the square in front of the station, between the Day and Night restaurant and the Steam Locomotive monument, dedicated to famous revolutionary events [2] .
The memory of these events formed the basis of the decision to devote the chapel to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, whose celebration of November 4 was a church-state holiday, Day of National Unity [3] .
The chapel of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was erected on the initiative of the Dean of the Taganrog District, Archpriest Alexei Lysikov with financial support from the president of Lemax Leonid Matusevich [4] .
The symbolic laying of stone at the construction site of the chapel of the icon of the Kazan Mother of God took place on May 24, 2011 [5] . The mayor of the city Nikolai Fedyanin took part in the ceremony [5] .
On July 21, 2012, a dome was erected on the chapel in a festive atmosphere [6] .
The chapel of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was erected according to the design of the Taganrog designer Vladimir Elitenko [4] . The iconostasis of the chapel is made by masters of Palekh [4] .
The northern and southern walls of the chapel are decorated with bas-reliefs with images of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Nikolai Ugodnik ( Nikola Nikola Mozhaiskogo ) [4] , over which the sculptor Taganrog Vladimir Dmitriev worked for six months [3] . The temple painting was performed by the Taganrog artist Natalya Krasnovskaya, the stained-glass windows were made by Rostov specialist Mikhail Abramenko [3] .
The chapel of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was consecrated on November 19, 2012 , on the 220th anniversary of the birth of the holy blessed elder Pavel Taganrog [7] [8] . Metropolitan of Rostov and Novocherkassk Mercury consecrated the chapel with a large crowd of people [9] . The Metropolitan awarded Leonid Matusevich with a medal of St. Blessed Paul of Taganrog of the 1st degree, and employees of the Lemax company with bishops' letters [9] .
Criticism
- Opponents of the construction of a chapel on this site believe that the constructed building puts an end to the concept of “ square ”, since the square is an open, architecturally organized space framed by buildings and green spaces, free from development, and the built-up area is no longer such [9] .
