Molly Gunn carelessly and cheerfully lives in a luxurious apartment in New York on the inheritance left by her late parents. Her father is the legend of rock famous Tommy Gunn. But at one point, it turns out that her accountant appropriated all the money, she was penniless and she was evicted from the apartment.

And so Molly, moving from one friend to another and trying to cling to some work, gets into the house of Roma Shlein, or rather, her eight-year-old daughter Ray. Roma is a music manager, always disappearing at work, and Ray is a psychotherapist who has been visiting since three years of age and is obsessed with illnesses and germs by a girl whose father is at home in a coma and her mother does not care about her at all. In the beginning, Molly and Ray can’t find a common language for a long time, because Ray attends ballet and loves the classics, and Molly is a sloven who, instead of her pet, piggy Mu, loves loud rock music and dancing to it. But later, Molly tells Ray about how her parents died (just when she was 8 too) and she ran away to the amusement park and rode in the "cups", and the relationship with Ray becomes friendlier. Molly advises Ray to talk with his father, although he is in a coma, saying that the people with whom they spoke felt much better. But Ray's father dies the next day, Molly is fired at the request of the girl, and Ray herself escapes after school. And only Molly was able to find her in the amusement park, riding on "cups".

At a party in honor of her previous birthday, Molly meets musician Neil Fox and falls in love with him. Molly invites him to his home and shows his father’s guitars, which Neil is delighted with, as he is a big fan of Molly’s father. Later, Molly buys Egyptian cotton bedclothes as a gift to Neal. But Neil says that they can’t meet further, because they constantly spend time together, and he needs to work on music. Molly returns Neal his “happy” jacket, which she took earlier, but redone, adding fur from a toy tiger and so on, which Neal really did not like. Later, Molly finds out that Neil signed the same contract, but, meeting him early in the morning at Roma’s house, he understands why they broke up.

Molly, after being stranded, lives first with her friend Ingrid, but she soon expels her, and Molly moves to her friend Huey. One day they see a new clip of Neal, in which he is dressed in Molly’s lucky jacket and sings a song about Egyptian sheets. After which, Huey tells Molly that without her, Neil would be the singer of one song, that she was his muse. After Molly auctioned off her father’s guitar to an unknown buyer, she finally can afford her own modest home.

At Ray's father’s funeral, the musicians approaching Molly, who saw her jacket on the Nile, and offer to do the same for them. Molly understands that she has a talent for fashion design and is going to go to fashion school.

Molly decorates Ray's conservative pack with sparkles for a performance. And having come to the concert, she sees a surprise that Ray arranged for her - she dances to the accompaniment of Neil, who sings her father’s song “Molly’s Smile” and plays his acoustic guitar, and all the other guitars are held by the ballerina girls.
