Player Career

He played in the position of a heavy striker . He studied at the University of Southern California , in 1948 he was selected for the NBA draft under the 38th number by the Indianapolis Jets team, who played in the American Basketball Association , but did not play a single match for this club. He later played for Oshkosh All Stars ( NBL ), Syracuse Nationals , Baltimore Bulls , Rochester Royals , Milwaukee / St. Louis Hawks and Fort Wayne Pistons . In total, the NBA spent 12 seasons. During his career in the NBA, he played 516 games in which he scored 3078 points (an average of 6.0 per game), made 2013 rebounds and 857 assists .

Coach Career

After completing his professional career, Hannum coached the St. Louis Hawks , Syracuse Nationals / Philadelphia 76 , San Francisco Warriors , Auckland Oaks ( ABA ), San Diego Rockets and Denver Rockets ( ABA).

Hannum began the season of 1956/1957 as a player of the St. Louis Hawks team, and ended already as a playing coach , having played 31 games at this post. The next season, he finally switched to coaching, following which he led the Hawks to the NBA title, and nine years later, in the 1966/67 season , Alex repeated his achievement with Seventy Sixers. Thus, he became the first of three head coaches in the history of the NBA who won the championship with two different teams (later Phil Jackson and Pat Riley repeated his success).

In 1964, Hannum, coaching the Warriors already, at the end of the season, following which his team reached the NBA finals , where they lost to the Boston Celtics Bill Russell , was recognized as the NBA coach of the year .

Five years later, in the 1968/1969 season , already heading the Oakland Oaks ABA club, he and his new team won the title of ABA champions , becoming the first of two head coaches in history to win both the NBA and ABA (later Bill Sherman repeated his success for three years, but he achieved this faster, in just two years). At the end of this year, he was recognized as an ABA coach of the year , in addition, also with Sherman, they became winners in this nomination in both leagues.

In 1971-1974 he coached the other Denver Rockets ABA team, relegating it to the playoffs twice, but both times the Rockets were inferior to the Indiana Pacers club in the first round. In 1974, his team, due to the same performance at the end of the regular season , was forced to play butt matches for San Diego Conquistadors for the right to enter the playoffs, as a result of which the opponent was stronger, after which the head coach was fired.

Twice was appointed to the post of head coach of the match of all NBA stars in the West team (1958, 1965), and also once - in the East team (1968).

In 1998, Hannum was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach [1] .
