Archdiocese of Port of Spain

The Archdiocese of Port of Spain ( Latin: Archidioecesis Portus Hispaniae ) is the archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church with its center in Port of Spain , Trinidad and Tobago . The Metropolitanate of Port of Spain includes the dioceses of Bridgetown , Willemstad , Georgetown , Kingstown and Paramaribo . The Cathedral of the Port of Spain Archdiocese is the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is a small basilica .

History

In 1516, the Holy See established the territorial prelature in Trinidad, which lasted until 1650.

On February 22, 1818, the Holy See established the Apostolic Vicariate of Trinidad, separating it from the diocese of Santo Thomas de Guyana (today - the Archdiocese of Ciudad Bolivar ).

On January 10, 1837, the Apostolic Vicariate of Trinidad transferred part of its territory for the formation of the new Apostolic Vicariate of Jamaica (today - the Archdiocese of Kingston ).

On April 30, 1850, the Apostolic Vicariate of Trinidad handed over part of its territory for the construction of the new Diocese of Roseau and on the same day was transformed into the Archdiocese of Port of Spain.

On February 20, 1956, the Port of Spain Archdiocese transferred part of its territory to form the new diocese of St. George's .

The Port of Spain Archdiocese is part of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of the Antilles .
