Biography
Claudia Fedorovna Kostina was born on January 7 ( January 20 ), 1900 in the city of Pokrov (now Vladimir Region ). She graduated in 1925 from the Moscow Agricultural Academy . Then she moved to Crimea and began working in the Nikitsky Botanical Garden . A few years later, Klavdia Fedorovna got a job at the All-Union Institute of Plant Production in Leningrad , and soon became the head of the stone fruit crops section.
Since 1928, Kostina went on an expedition to Central Asia , the Caucasus and the Crimea to study apricots and peaches . In 1932, she began apricot breeding activities. During the Great Patriotic War, Claudia Fedorovna worked at the Fruit and Vegetable Institute , then at Oirot-Tour . After the war, she returned to the Nikitsky Botanical Garden [1] .
At the end of the 40s of the last century, KF Kostina, who worked at the Nikitsky Botanical Garden in Yalta , began to examine abandoned gardens that remained on the southern coast of Crimea after the war. There she identified a large number of large-fruited varieties of cherry plum . The fruits of these varieties ripened a month earlier than the plum home , along with apricot in July. Its only drawback was not large enough fruit. Crossbreeding the best varieties of cherry plum with large-fruited varieties of Chinese plum , bred by L. Burbank in California, K.F. Kostina received the first varieties of hybrid cherry plum, combining early maturing and ecological adaptability to European conditions, plum with large size and high quality fruits of the southern varieties of Chinese plum. Especially widespread is the variety 'Abundant' (winter-hardy variety in the Donbass, but in the south of the Black Earth region it already freezes) [2] .
Claudia Fedorovna Kostina died in Crimea on June 4, 1978 .
