Content
Edition
In Britain, “The power of goodbye” was released on a double single, along with the song “Little Star”. In the rest of Europe, the song was on the B-side. Some European publications have also included several experimental remixes of Little Star and one remix of Dallas Austin, who previously worked with the singer on the album Bedtime Stories .
Criticism
Overall, the criticism was positive, and some called this song “one of Madonna’s most serious ballads.” PopMasters said the song, along with Frozen, Ray of Light, Drowned World \ Subsutute for Love, and Beautiful Stranger, is "can be used on electronic gadgets to attract users." Slant Magazine praised the song.
Charts
In Britain, the song reached 6th position and held on the chart for 9 weeks. 180,000 copies sold. The song entered the top 20 of Mexico, Canada, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands. And in the USA it reached the 11th position. In Spain, the song debuted in 2nd position, making the song the only single from the album that did not reach the top of the chart.
Music video
Background and Story
The director of the song was Matthew Roltson. Filming took place from August 8-10. The video was released on MTV on September 10th. The video is made in blue and green tones. Many fans of the singer considered this clip the best in her entire career. It is noteworthy, but Madonna chose the location of filming in the place where the video for the single "Cherish" from the album Like a Prayer was shot. In the video, Madonna plays chess, and then throws them off the table with a sharp movement of the hand from the table, which symbolizes the end of the relationship. Madonna also walks on the sea, but it is not clear whether she is drowning in the last scene. The lover of Madonna was played by the future actor of the cult series " Ambulance " Croatian Goran Vishnich.
Contradiction
Although many people liked the video, the ending was not clear to the end. In the last scene, Madonna goes deep into the sea, which looks like suicide. But on the other hand, water can be considered a symbol of rebirth, a symbol of new life. This part of the video was taken from another song from the album “Ray of Light” - “Swim”. There is a line in this song: “I'm gonna swim to the ocean floor”, which means “I will reach the bottom of the ocean”.
