Scientific Biography
In the 30s, he worked at the State Institute of Nitrogen Industry, where, together with M.K. Grodzovsky, he proposed a new method of gasification of solid fuel - high-speed gasification (at high filtration rates). On the basis of experimental data, he confirmed the hypothesis of the simultaneous formation of CO and CO 2 as primary products during combustion and coal gasification and proposed a theory of the "removal" of combustible gaseous components from the reaction zone.
At the end of the 30s he moved to the VTI , where he continued his research together with A. S. Predvidelev , L. N. Khitrin and others. He conducted the first systematic studies on carbon combustion in the low-temperature region (in the range from 300-500 to 750-800 ° C), showed the presence of two competing mechanisms of the reaction of carbon with oxygen: low-temperature oxidation (proceeds according to the total reaction 3C + 2О 2 = СО 2 + 2СО) and high-temperature combustion (mainly proceeds according to the 2С + О 2 = 2СО scheme).
He studied the processes of carbon combustion based on the proposed mechanism (together with N. A. Karzhavina). He proposed (earlier the works of Kh. I. Kolodtsev) a number of engineering techniques for calculating the regimes of gasification of carbon in the layer, including for calculating the length of the oxygen zone, temperature profile, and the propagation velocity of the combustion zone in the fuel layer. It was experimentally shown that the length of the oxygen zone in the coal layer is several particle diameters. One of the first to establish the important role of radiation in heat transfer in a burning layer.
In the 50s he began to deal with issues of energy-technological use of solid fuels. He proposed the theory of series-parallel reactions of the pyrolysis of the organic mass of solid fuels, based on which he showed that the most effective way to control the processes of thermal decomposition of fuel is the heating rate. He showed that in existing plants for the semi-coking of coal, it is practically impossible to control the heating rate, therefore, he proposed to carry out the semi-coking of finely dispersed fuel in the stream, including using a solid heat carrier (for example, ash).
He developed the theory of ignition of a stream of pulverized fuel. He also dealt with economic issues in the extraction and use of fossil fuels.
He developed a number of designs of dense and fluidized bed gas generators , as well as installations for the rapid pyrolysis of pulverized coal and shale. Under his leadership and with his participation, plants for the energy technological processing of coal ETX-175 ( Krasnoyarsk TPP-2 ) and shale: UTT-500 ( Estonian TPP ) were developed. Due to the exhaustion of interest in the preparation of liquid pyrolysis products, the plants are currently not functioning.
In 1939, he became a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences for work in the field of burning coal and developing technologies for burning it. In addition to coal combustion issues, he was also involved in heat transfer studies in granular layers and gas suspensions. Together with E. A. Shapatina, she showed that the criterion equation for heat transfer between gas and particles in a granular layer is independent of the particle material and Fedorov's formula (Nu ~ Re 0.83 ). He proposed a method of intensifying heat transfer in pipes by filling them with nozzles. He showed that in gas suspensions the criterial dependence of the heat transfer coefficient is similar to the formula for the granular layer.
Z.F. Chukhanov died on December 22, 1986 . He was buried at the Trinity New Cemetery in the Istra District of the Moscow Region [1] .
