Construction
The mosque was built in 1869 - 1871 by architect Sarkis Balian on behalf of Pertevnial Sultan , spouses of Sultan Mahmud II and mother of Sultan Abdulaziz [1] . During the construction, a combination of various styles was used, such as Renaissance , Gothic , Imperial, Rococo and, of course, traditional Ottoman. The mosque has two minarets and a small (in diameter) high dome [2] .
Next to the mosque there is a fountain, a library, a turvot Pertevniil Sultan. Later the library was transferred to the Suleymaniye complex library. Initially, the mosque rose above Aksaray Square ( tour. Aksaray meydani ), but after the reconstruction of Atatürk Boulevard ( tour Atatürk bulvari ) and the construction of traffic intersections in the late 50s of the XX century, it was below street level and lost some of its greatness [2] .
