Biography

Rene Brightbart was born March 24, 1966 in the city of Mühlhausen , the federal state of Thuringia . As a child, he was actively involved in gymnastics, but due to the injury he was forced to abandon his gymnastics career and at the age of nine he went into boxing. At first he trained in one of the boxing halls of Stralsund under the guidance of coach Heinz-Peter Schmidt, in 1979, after winning the Junior Baltic Cup, by invitation he moved to Schwerin to join the local sports club. The first major success in the ring was in 1984, when he won the minimum weight in the adult championship of the GDR and later the European Junior Championship in Tampere. A year later, he won first place in the adult European Championship in Budapest, defeating the titled Bulgarian Ivaylo Marinov in the final.

In 1986, Brightbart moved into the lightest weight category, once again won the national championship and got a ticket to the world championship in Reno, where he managed to reach the finals, but in the decisive match he was defeated by Korean boxer Moon Song Gil . At the 1987 European Championships in Turin, he won a bronze medal, while at the World Cup in Belgrade he was second. Thanks to a series of successful appearances, he won the right to defend the honor of the country at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul , he planned to compete for medals here, but in his third match at the tournament he lost 1-4 to Colombian Jorge Julio , who eventually reached the stage of semifinals and received bronze. After this defeat, the German athlete decided to end his career by leaving the national team.

Despite the decision to end his career, after the reunification of Germany in 1990, Rene Brightbart again returned to the ring, joining the Bayer 04 boxing club from Leverkusen . He took the second place in the national championship standings, however, he did not show outstanding results anymore, so he soon accepted the offer of the famous coach Fritz Zdunek to become his assistant. Since 1993, he participated in the training of many famous boxers, including Felix Sturm and Lukasz Vilashek , who, under his direct supervision, won medals at the European and 2000 Championships, respectively. In 2003, Brightbart finally tied up with the sport and retired.
