In the early 1990s, the Association of Tanatologists of St. Petersburg existed, subsequently reorganized into the St. Petersburg Society of Tanatological Research (as part of the Center for Contemporary Philosophy and Culture of the Russian Humanitarian Institute, St. Petersburg State University, headed by M. S. Uvarov ).

The Association of Tanatologists of St. Petersburg, with the participation of the St. Petersburg branch of the Institute of Human Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, published the almanac "Figures of Thanatos" - a non-periodical philosophical and cultural publication published in St. Petersburg since 1991 edited by A. V. Demichev and M. S. Uvarov. In total, six issues were published, and according to the site anthropology.ru [1] , work is currently underway on the seventh issue on the issue of suicide, which will be published under the auspices of the St. Petersburg Tanatological Research Society. The name of the almanac was the image of the Greek god of death of Thanatos .
