Board
Pasquale Malipiero was elected to doge on October 30, 1457 at the age of 65, when former Doge Foscari was still alive. Two days after the death of his predecessor, the new Doge took part in a state funeral (despite the widow’s protests), and at the ceremony he was present dressed in senatorial attire.
Malipiero was promoted to the position by the doge by those families that had previously been in opposition to the previous ruler, and the conditions imposed on him completely constrained his own initiative. Often he refused to make even the simplest decisions without prior approval. In the eyes of the townspeople, the new Doge lost a comparison with its predecessor, who always acted confidently, independently, therefore people did not have much respect for the new ruler. Contemporaries characterized Malipiero as a weak-tempered, undistinguished person.
The course chosen by Malipiero was completely opposite to Pasquale’s predecessor’s military policy, Francesco Foscari .
During the reign of the Doge, the Republic was in a state of stability and peace. Thanks to this, Pasquale Malipiero went down in history with the nickname dux pacificus , which means the peaceful prince .
In 1458, Pasquale Malipiero signed a series of laws that limited the power of the Council of Ten.
In 1459, Pope Pius II demanded that Venice send the galleys to take part in a new crusade against the infidels, but the Doge evaded this decision, inventing various pretexts.
The Doge's headstone is located in the side nave of the Cathedral of Santi Giovanni e Paolo . Sculptures of allegorical figures of peace and justice over the tombstone are made by Pietro Lombardo .
