The sphere of scientific interests of A. V. Zavadsky is composed of the problems of civil proceedings.
The works of A. V. Zavadsky on civil law and civil process cover a wide range of problems and are characterized by three qualities: the depth of the problems studied, a subtle analysis of the views available in the literature on the studied question and a good knowledge of judicial practice. He gave a deep theoretical substantiation of the legal side of a number of high-profile court cases, including a dispute between the heirs of L. N. Tolstoy’s manuscripts. In 1905, he defended three privat-docents dismissed from the university, deprived of this title, criticized the actions of the Ministry of National Education, arguing that, according to Russian legislation, a privat-docent can be deprived of the title only by a court sentence and only as one of the punishments for the guilty criminal offense. In his work on the interpretation of civil laws, which remained unfinished, he made an attempt to determine the scientific significance for the civil law of the newest division of legal science into three parts: legal dogma, sociology of law, and politics of law.
