In July 2007, he agreed to pay (the second after payment in 2006 [2] ) a record $ 660 million for such cases in the United States to victims of sexual violence by the clergy of the diocese; [3] [4] payments to the plaintiffs put the diocese on the brink of bankruptcy , but allowed its head to avoid testifying in court. At the end of January 2013, an editorial in The New York Times related to the cardinal’s role in systematically concealing the clergy’s sexual crimes during his tenure with the Los Angeles Archdiocese wrote: “None of the Roman Catholic cardinals worked so hard and long as Cardinal Roger Mahoney, in order to conceal the long-standing scandal around sexual violence and intimidation of children by criminal priests. For many years, the cardinal hid unsightly church documents from parents, victims, and the public, threatening endless litigation and stupid references to privacy. ” [5]
On February 27, 2016, Cardinal Mahoney turned eighty years old and lost the right to participate in the Conclaves .
