The car and motorcycle license plate system in Portugal is simple and consistent. It has nothing to do with geographic location. Consist of two numbers, two letters and two numbers separated by a hyphen. This system began in 1937 with AA-10-00, then changed to 00-00-AA and recently switched to 00-AA-00. At the same time, the last row is coming to an end and in the near future it will be replaced by the AA-00-AA series.
Portuguese numbers are similar to the former Dutch.
Colors The original Portuguese numbers consisted of white letters on a black background.
In 1992, the design was changed to black characters, a blue ribbon with 12 stars and a P code was added.
In 1998, a yellow bar appeared on the right side of the number indicating the time of registration of the car (for example, 99/12 - in December 1999).
