History
On June 17, 1893, Pope Leo XIII issued a breve “Romani Pontífices”, by which he established the apostolic vicariate Casanare, selecting him from the diocese of Tunja (today the Archdiocese of Tunja ). The jurisdiction of the apostolic vicariate Casanare extended to the entire territory of the department of Casanare . The pastoral care of the apostolic vicariate Casanare was entrusted to monks from the monastic congregation of Augustinian recollectionists. The first apostolic vicar of the apostolic vicariate of Casanare was Esekel Moreno-i-Diaz , who in October 1992 was counted among the saints by the Pope John Paul II .
On May 26, 1925, the apostolic vicariate of Casanare transferred part of his territory to form the apostolic prefecture of Arauka (today the Diocese of Arauca ).
On October 29, 1999, the Holy See abolished the Apostolic Vicariate Casanare, transferring its territory to the diocese of Yopal and the Apostolic Vicariate of Trinidad .
