Aircraft
IL-18D with tail number SU-APC (factory - 188011301, serial - 113-01) was released by the MMZ Znamya Truda plant in 1968 . After the tests were completed, by March 4, 1969, the Russian language was transferred to the Egyptian United Arab Airlines [1] [2] .
Holocaust
The plane performed a charter flight from Jeddah to Aswan . On board were 7 crew members and 98 pilgrims who had previously won a trip to Mecca and were now returning home. The plane landed at night, in addition, there was a dust storm in Aswan at that time, due to which visibility fell from 10 to 2-3 kilometers. Two approaches were interrupted because the crew did not see the lane . The third call was carried out at two in the morning. To better see the ground, the pilots dropped below a safe height. But then the airliner tilted to the left and began to lead away. Trying to return the aircraft to the landing course, the crew transferred it to the right bank, which, however, led to a decrease in altitude. At 1120 meters from the end of the runway, the plane crashed into the ground with the right plane of the wing . The plane detached from the impact, and the fuel leaking from damaged fuel tanks ignited. IL-18 crashed into the ground and burned [1] [3] .
Emergency services that arrived at the crash site found 9 surviving passengers, but 4 later died in hospitals. In total, 100 people were killed in the crash [1] [3] .
Reason
The cause of the disaster was called the crew error, which fell below a safe height in the absence of visibility of runway lights. Crew fatigue caused by the long duration of work without appropriate rest periods [1] could lead to such an error.
