Oronim

It was named by the Cossacks in the XVIII century in honor of St. Dionysius .

In the language of the indigenous people called Tamlyan - "broken tip". There are several Chukchi traditions explaining the origin of the name Tamlyan. According to one, at the foot of the mountain there was a big battle with the aliens, during which many copies were broken. According to another, two women found a bone needle here and, without dividing it among themselves, broke the tip of the find in the fray. The third legend says that the mountain is the body of the strongman Tamil, who died in battle with the strongman Valvylyvyt [3] .

Paleobotany

In 2012, scientists discovered a fossil flora near the mountain, dating from the Late Cretaceous - the Paleocene . This flora was isolated in the Tamlian fossil flora and has over 21 species of higher plants. The collected collections are stored in the stock collections of the Heritage of Chukotka museum center in Anadyr [4] [5] .

Incidents

On December 11, 1982, the Mi-8 helicopter crashed near Mount Dionysius. All on board ten people died. The cause of the accident was bad weather and crew error [6] . In memory of those killed in 2009 by local enthusiasts, a worship cross was erected on the mountain [7] .
