History
San Juan del Cesar was founded on June 24, 1701 .
Geographical position
The city is located in the southwestern part of the department, on the right bank of the Cesar River , at a distance of approximately 670 kilometers northeast (NNE) from the country's capital Bogota . The absolute height is 245 meters above sea level [1] .
The area of the municipality is 1415 km² [2] .
Population
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2012 was 35,972 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the city by years:

According to the 2005 census, men made up 49.5% of the population of the city, women - 50.5%, respectively. In racial terms, whites and mestizos accounted for 75.5% of the population of the city; Indians - 13.5%; blacks , mulattoes and Raisals - 11% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 87.3%.
Economics
61.2% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 33% are service enterprises, 5% are industrial enterprises, 0.8% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
