Beaver Street begins east of the intersection with Pearl Street , confining itself to West Broadway . In the early years, a canal passed along the street, which was a lead from the canal on today's Broad Street . Then the street was called Beaver Graft ( Dutch. Bever Graft ) [1] [2] [3] . The street got its name in honor of the beaver ( English beaver and Dutch. Bever ), whose fur played a decisive role in the development of the economy of New Amsterdam and early New York. In 1695, a synagogue was opened on Beaver Street, [4] the first in the city [5] and one of the first in thirteen colonies [6] .
