Campaigns of Russia against Byzantium

Meeting of the Russian Prince Svyatoslav Igorevich and the Byzantine Emperor John Tzimiskes . Lebedev K.V. , 1916

The campaigns of Russia and the Rus state against Byzantium are a series of military conflicts between the Rus people or the Rus state created by him in 882 and the Byzantine empire .

The period of the 9th - 10th centuries was the time of the territorial expansion of the people of Russia and the formation of statehood of the state of Russia created by him in 882 . One of the main reasons for the expansion to the south was the desire of the Rus to control the " way from the Varangians to the Greeks " and with it profitable trade with the richest Byzantium. One of the main goals of the military campaigns of the Rus was the capital of the Byzantine Empire - Constantinople (dr. Russian. Tsargrad ).
