Wh (Digraph)

Wh wh wh wh
Wh wh wh wh

Wh is the digraph used in English . Indicates the sounds [ w ] and [ h ] (in the words who (m), whole and related ones).

Use

Almost all interrogative words (except how) begin with the digraph wh. It is also used in some common words (white, whiskey, etc.).

Some native speakers of English (mainly the north of England, Scotland and Ireland) pronounce a combination of letters wh as a deaf fricative phoneme [ʍ]. Therefore, one can distinguish words by sense (witch [ w ɪ ʧ ] - which [ ʍ ɪ ʧ ], wear [ w e ǝ ] - where [ ʍ e ǝ ], weil [ w e ɪ l ] - whale [ ʍ e ɪ l ]). It is believed that this sound is not an independent phoneme, but is an implementation of a sequence of two phonemes - [ h ] and [ w ].
