Alfonso López Michelsen from the Conservative Party managed to collect 40.7% of the votes of the voters who came to the polls and win by a small margin over Gustavo Rojas Pinilla . Thus, Lopez was proclaimed president of Colombia. However, opponents accused him of fraud and held protests. From disagreement with the outcome of these elections, the left partisan movement began on April 19 .
The elections took place on the same day as the 1970 parliamentary elections ; this was the first such case of combining these elections. As a result of the parliamentary elections, the liberals won.
Only preservative candidates participated in the presidential election. Each of the 4 candidates was supported by factions in both the Conservative and the Liberal parties.
