List of Soviet women awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal

Ekaterina Illarionovna Dyomina (Mikhailova) at the Victory Day parade on May 9, 2013

The Florence Nightingale Medal is the highest international distinction for rewarding nurses “ for exceptional courage and dedication in caring for victims of armed conflicts and natural disasters, or for exemplary service, resourcefulness and an innovative spirit in public health or nursing education ” [1] .

The International Committee of the Red Cross awards the medal once every two years, on May 12, at the suggestion of the national Red Cross societies.

The Soviet Red Cross made the first representations for the award of a medal in 1961. And in the same 1961, the International Committee of the Red Cross awarded two Soviet nurses. They became Irina Nikolaevna Levchenko and Lidia Filippovna Savchenko. In total, over the years of the existence of the Soviet Union, the Florence Nightingale Medal has been awarded to 46 Soviet women - nurses, military paramedics, sanitary instructors, and other medical workers. All of them were awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal for their dedicated work during the years of World War II [2] .
