History
The first known bridge across the Golden Horn Bay was built under the rule of Emperor Justinian , the bridge was located in the area of Theodosian walls .
During the capture of Constantinople in 1453 for the transfer of troops from one side of the bay to the other, the Turks gathered a floating bridge, putting their ships close to each other.
In the years 1502 - 1503 under the rule of Sultan Bayazid II , projects of bridges across the bay were considered, one of the projects was developed by Leonardo da Vinci . The project involved the construction of a bridge 240 meters long and 24 meters wide, which for those times was grand. Another project developed by Michelangelo . But the projects were not destined to become a reality.
At the beginning of the 19th century, under the rule of Sultan Mahmud II , in 1836 a pontoon bridge about 500–540 meters long was built across the bay, it was located west of the modern Galata bridge.
First Bridge
The first Galata bridge was built in 1845 in wooden execution with the direct participation of Besmialem Walid Sultan , mother of Sultan Abdul-Medzhid I. After the construction was completed, Valide Bridge or New Bridge was named, the passage over the bridge was paid.
Second Bridge
In 1863 , before the visit of Napoleon III to Istanbul , the bridge was substantially rebuilt by order of Sultan Abdulaziz .
Third Bridge
The next major reconstruction of the bridge was carried out in 1875 . The bridge length was 480 meters, width - 14 meters. Like its predecessors, the bridge was wooden, the passage over the bridge was toll.
Fourth (Old Galata Bridge) and Fifth Bridge
The fourth Galata bridge was built in 1912 by the German company MAN. This bridge was 466 meters long and 25 meters wide. He served until 1992 , when he was significantly damaged in a fire. After the fire was moved upstream Khalich , and in its place in 1992 - 1994, the Turkish company STFA erected a fifth, fifth, bridge that is currently in use. In 2005 a tram line was laid across the bridge. Rails laid on concrete sleepers on top of the roadway of the bridge, fenced on both sides to ensure the uninterrupted movement of trains. Their interval at peak hours is a little more than a minute. The bridge became the scene of the final scene in the film Girl on the Bridge, 1999. There are fish restaurants on the lower tier of the bridge.
