Cross section of a root nodule wiki ( Vicia ). Bacteroids are small dark spheres between the cells of plant tissue .
Bacteroids are a special resting form found in bacteria of the order Rhizobiales . Bacteroids are formed in the root nodules of plants of the legume family ( Fabaceae ). They are large (10-40 times larger than ordinary) cells of irregular shape, often branched. In nodules containing bacteroids, there is a pigment legoglobin , close to hemoglobin . Apparently, nodules owe him the ability to fix nitrogen [1] . It is at the bacteroid stage that bacteria have the highest nitrogen-fixing activity [2] .
The emergence of bacteroids is associated with the life cycle of nodule bacteria [3] and occurs in many species from the Rhizobiales order.
