Gregorio Vazquez de Arce y i Ceballos was born on May 9, 1638 in the city of Santa Fe de Bogotá in New Granada (now Bogotá , Colombia ). Gregorio had Andalusian roots, as his ancestors moved to South America from Seville in the 16th century.

Gregorio Vazquez is considered the greatest artist of Colombia, who lived and worked in the heyday of the Baroque style . Most of his paintings have a religious plot, including themes about the life of Jesus Christ , the Virgin Mary and Catholic saints, as well as scenes from the New Testament . Allegorical and portraiture occupies a more modest place in his work.
