Biography

Vasily Regel was born in a family of hereditary Calvinist nobles , originating from Germany . His father was the botanist ани . L. Regel . In 1875 , Vasily graduated from the Reformed School in St. Petersburg. From 1875 to 1880 , he studied at the Faculty of History and Philology of St. Petersburg University . During his studies, he studied Slavic history under the direction of Professor V. I. Lamansky . After graduation, he was left there to prepare for a professorship .

In 1884–88, he was on a business trip to work in foreign archives, visited Athens , Patmos Island, Berlin , Paris , Rome , Vienna , London , Barcelona and other cities. After the completion of the trip, from August 16, 1888 until January 1, 1910, was listed as a privat-docent of Petersburg University. In 1890 his master's thesis was published on the topic “On the Chronicle of Kozma Prazhsky ”, highly appreciated by the scientific community; March 20, 1892 he received a master 's degree in universal history. In 1898 he was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences [1] .

In 1913, he moved to Yuriev , where on August 1, 1914, he became an ordinary professor in the department of general history at the faculty of history and philology at Yurievsky University . On October 10, 1917, he became Professor Emeritus.

In 1918 , in connection with the German occupation of the Baltic states , Yuryevsk University (together with workers and students) was evacuated to Voronezh and renamed to Voronezh University , the first rector of which was V.E. Regel. In this position he was from 1918 to 1925. Then he worked as a director of the Voronezh State University, founded by him as the Museum of Antiquities and Fine Arts. At the end of his life he emigrated to Lithuania .

Editorial activities

Together with V. G. Vasilievsky, he was the editor of the Byzantine journal of the Byzantine Temporary magazine in 1894 - 1899 , which was conceived as early as 1892. After the death of V. G. Vasilyevsky, Regel was the sole editor of the journal in 1900 - 1914 . During his stay in the town of Yuriev, he published three volumes of the journal Byzantine Review (1915–1917).
