Biography
Pavel Baranov was born in Moscow on July 16 (28), 1892 , studied at the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow University (from the end of 1917 - “Moscow State University”) , graduated from it in 1917 , then a teacher at the Moscow gymnasium, high school ( 1917 - 1920 ), Boundary Institute of the People's Commissar of Education of the RSFSR in Moscow ( 1918 - 1920 ) [1] [2] .
From 1920 to 1944 he worked at the Central Asian State University (SAGU) (until 1923 - Turkestan State University, TurkSU), stood at the origins of this university, director of the Botanical Institute of SAGU (1921-1930), director of the Fundamental Library of SAGU ( 1928 - 1944 ) . Since 1928 - Professor of the Department of Plant Morphology and Anatomy of SAGU. From 1930 to 1938 he was the head of the Cytological and Anatomical Laboratory of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Cotton Production, the director of the Central Asian Department of the All-Union Institute of Plant Growing (1934-1935) [1] [2] [3] .
Baranov led many botanical expeditions in Central Asia . The first of them is an expedition to the Talas Alatau in 1921 , the western Tien Shan ( 1923 - 1927 ); Darvaz ( 1927 ); Kopetdag ( 1928 - 1929 ); led the Pamir expedition ( 1933 - 1943 ) - is one of the organizers of the Pamir Biological Station ("the organizer and in 1937 - 1940 - Director of the Pamir Biological Station" [3] ) and the Pamir Botanical Garden in Khorog [4] . In 1940, he was appointed director of the Botanical Institute of the Uzbek Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Tashkent [1] [2] [3] [4] .
During World War II, Baranov was engaged in the study of sugar beets . On September 29, 1943, he was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Since 1944, Baranov worked as deputy director of the Moscow Botanical Garden of the USSR Academy of Sciences, deputy director for science and head of the Laboratory of Plant Morphology and Anatomy of the Main Botanical Garden of the USSR Academy of Sciences ( 1945 - 1952 ), at the same time he teaches from 1948 to 1952 - professor, head of the Moscow Botany Department from the Lenin Pedagogical Institute , from 1952 to 1962 he worked as the director of the V. L. Komarov Botanical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences [1] [2] [3] .
In 1949, he was elected chairman of the Presidium of the Moldavian branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences [1] .
He is the author of more than 150 scientific papers on the problems of ontogenesis and plant shaping, a comprehensive botanical study of cotton, grapes, agricultural development of highland territories, and the history of botany, and participated in the creation of the fundamental monograph Flora of the USSR [3] .
Pavel Aleksandrovich Baranov died on May 17, 1962 after a short illness at the age of 70 in Leningrad , and was buried in the Serafimovsky cemetery [1] [2] [3] .
