The doctor is a representative of the extraterrestrial race [2] of the Time Lords from the planet Gallifrey , who, with the help of the space-time device TARDIS, travels through time and space [2] , most often with satellites. When the Doctor receives significant injuries, at his request the body can “regenerate”, but with each new incarnation his appearance and character change (memory and essence remain the same) [3] . This feature allowed the Doctor to be portrayed by various actors and thereby save the series since 1963.

On June 1, 2013, the BBC announced that Matt Smith , who had played the role of the Eleventh Doctor [4] [5] for four years, would leave the main cast of the series [6]. On August 4, 2013, it was officially announced that the role of the Twelfth Doctor will be played by the Scottish actor, Academy Award winner Peter Capaldi [7] . Capaldi had previously starred in the fourth season of Doctor Who, in which he played the role of Cecilia, and in the third season of the Torchwood spin-off in the role of John Frobisher.

Kapaldi first appears as a Doctor as a cameo in a special issue dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Doctor 's Day series, where, along with the other incarnations of the Doctor, Gallifrey is saved from destruction. His first full-fledged appearance took place at the end of the Christmas special issue of 2013, “ Doctor 's Time ”.

The first companion of this regeneration of the Doctor was the last companion of the Eleventh Doctor - Clara Oswald , played by Jenna Coleman [8] [9] . The doctor travels with her throughout the eighth and ninth seasons . The next companion of Dr. Bill Potts is played by Pearl Mackie [10] . Also, the company Doctor and Bill in the tenth season was Matt Lucas in the role of Nardol [11] .

January 30, 2017 it became known that Peter Capaldi leaves the series after the tenth season. The last series with his participation was the Christmas special issue of 2017 " Twice in Time " [12] . His follower was the English actress Jody Whittaker [13] .

Story

The Twelfth Doctor first appears in the Doctor 's Day series. He was seen by the Time Lords when all the incarnations of the Doctor are recounted (considering John Hurt ), saving Gallifrey . The Eleventh Doctor regenerated at the Twelfth at the end of the Doctor 's Time series. After regeneration, he suffered from partial amnesia for some time, including forgetting how to manage TARDIS .

In the series “ Deep breath ”, the TARDIS, having failed during the time of the dinosaurs , is transported to Victorian London , accidentally taking with it a tyrannosaurus . The Doctor still has post-regenerative amnesia. They are met by the Paternoster gang - Silurian Madame Vastra, her wife Jenny Flint and the Sontaran assistant Straks. Together with Clara, they manage to get the Doctor to rest in order to recover, but he escapes when he sees the spontaneous combustion of the dinosaur. In those days there were already several similar cases, behind which there is a Half-faced man - half a robot, half a man. The Doctor came across similar enemies in the eleventh incarnation (“ Girl in the Fireplace ” series), but the new Doctor was unable to establish a connection between them. After defeating the Half-Face man, the Doctor leaves her companion in the care of a trinity of friends, but soon returns with a restored memory, a new suit and a slightly modified interior of his time machine. The new incarnation seems in everything to be similar to the Scotsman (Peter Kapaldi is the Scot), which is manifested in his accent, attitude towards the British and Clara’s accidental delivery to Glasgow in her time.

Three weeks after Clara returned in her time, she met Danny Pink , a math teacher who had previously served as a soldier. From that moment on, she has a double life - together with the Doctor she meets with distant ones , Robin Hood , various monsters or just watches the wonders of the Universe, and the rest of the time she starts dating Danny. In the Keeper series, the Doctor discovers an alien threat from another time near the Coal Hill School where Clara and Danny work and decides to work undercover. Pink recognizes the other side of his girlfriend's life and even looks inside at the TARDIS. But the new Doctor, showing a strong hostility to the soldiers, not only does not invite him to travel with him and Clara, but also gangs up on the teacher, calling him a "physical instructor". The hostility between them and Danny is mutual, as the man sees the old general in an alien.

The relationship between the Doctor and Clara worsens, and when they find themselves in 2049 , where they have to make a difficult decision about the fate of the Moon , the Time Lord leaves the girl alone with the last astronaut and one of her students, Courtney Woods. After that, however, he returns, and does not allow humanity to make a mistake by showing the birth of a defenseless creature living in the Moon-Egg. After hatching, the Moon returns to the sky, but no beauty can calm Clara, and she decides to break with travel in time and space (series “ Kill the Moon ”).

The doctor takes Clara for the last time, it seems to them, for the Orient Express flying in space . After the events on the train, the girl decides to continue the adventure, but at the same time she lies to Danny that this is over (" Plane "). In the series “ In the Night Forest ”, when trees grow throughout the Earth in order to protect the planet from a solar flare, Pink catches Clara on a lie and makes it clear that she does not want to travel through time and space.

This does not save him, and at the end of the season he falls under the car, and his consciousness is recorded on the Gallifrey hard disk of the Realm of Non-Being. He is met by a mysterious man named Seb, explaining where he is and what happened to him. Clara forces the Doctor to save him, but he refuses, but after that, having seen the condition of the girl, he offers to find where the soul of her beloved is now. So they find themselves in a mysterious place with aquariums, where they are met by a woman named Missy, who pretended to be a welcoming droid. Meanwhile, it turns out that Danny left the army because he accidentally killed an innocent Afghan boy. Seb is trying to convince Pink to erase his emotions in order to get rid of the pain, while the Doctor realizes that Missy is not only behind the preservation of the dead and the new invasion of cybermen , but also turns out to be his old friend and enemy, the Master , now in a female form.

While Clara is trapped in the 3W Institute (“Three words” - three words: “Do not cremate me!”) Flooded by cybermen, Doctors and Missy find UNIT forces. They see how the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral opens, inside which the 3W Institute is located, and from there ninety-one cybermen fly out. Most are scattered in major cities of Great Britain, while one explodes over the cathedral. Thus, they spray cyber pollen, which can turn corpses into recruits for the cyber army. The body of Danny Pink is no exception. He finds himself inside a metal shell and, clutching a form with his name in one hand, goes to the 3W Institute, where he rescues Clara from three other cybermen and takes her to the cemetery. UNIT appoints the Doctor as President of the Earth and transports two Time Lords to Board No. 1. The aircraft is attacked from the outside and inside, and the Doctor drops out of it, but manages to call the TARDIS before it crashes. Missy, teleported to the Realm of Non-Being, is watching this with herself. Seb actively reacts to what is happening, and the Time Lady, revealing to the viewer that her assistant is just the embodiment of artificial intelligence, incinerates him calmly using a special device. Clara learns that Danny is cyber-modified, but not without emotion. He asks for help, begs him to turn off his feelings. The girl doesn’t succeed, she calls the Doctor, who at that time dealt with the released Missy, but he arrives later and tries to find out the plans of the cybermen. Again, the strained relationship between the Doctor and Kick is shown, and the latter says that he would talk about them if his emotions were turned off. Clara uses a sound screwdriver and relieves her beloved of mental suffering. The doctor finds out about the plans of Missy and the cybermen, and at this moment she arrives at them. After some skirmish, she makes it clear that all this is just a birthday present to the Doctor, so that he understands that they are similar to her, but the Doctor refuses the army, having given the bracelet controlling all the cybermen, except Danny, actually Danny Pink. He orders the cyber army to take off and destroy the dangerous clouds and does it with them. Missy calls Gallifrey's old coordinates. The Doctor is about to get rid of her, but with the help of a teleportation beam he is ahead of the cyber Brigadier , another old friend of the Doctor. He saved his daughter, who fell out of the plane during the attack. The doctor salutes the cyber Brigadier, and he soars into the sky.

From the Orb of Nothingness, Danny is the last to contact Clara. He can return only one person to the world of the living and returns instead of himself the boy he had once killed. The doctor checks to see if Gallifrey is in place and realizes that Missy lied to him. He flies to Clara to say goodbye. He lies to her that he still found his home planet, and she - that Danny is back. In parting, they hug. Clara thought that she would never meet the Doctor again, but one day she was in the same dream with him and four random people. To get out and survive, it was necessary to understand where the dream is and where the reality is. The so-called Sleepy Crabs, or Kantrofarry, caused a multilayer hassle. When something goes wrong with them, the monsters fall from the faces of the victims and crumble to dust. After the final awakening, the Doctor asks Clara to travel with him again, and she accepts his offer.

Second Chance

At the beginning of the ninth season, the Doctor accidentally lands on Scaro in one of his solo journeys at the height of the war, where he meets little Davros , the future creator of the Daleks . At first he is going to save the boy, but, having learned his name, he is horrified and flies away from the planet. The doctors are guilty of feeling guilty for their act, and when news comes to him that somewhere in the future, the already dying Davros wants to meet with him, decides to call. The doctor understands that this is a trap, and yet he is ready to pay for his mistake with his own life. Notifying anyone, including Clara, the Doctor decides to spend his last days, having thrown a grandiose party in medieval England. His will in the form of a confessional disk is given to Missy, who survived after the finale of the previous season. The alarmed lady of the time teams up with Clara to find the Doctor. They succeed, but all of them are captured by Davros. By pressing pity, Davros tricked the Doctor into giving away part of his regenerative energy to distant ones. He foresaw his actions and allowed him to do this, since part of the energy was transferred to the dying far in the sewers of Scaro, which immediately wreaked havoc in the city, thereby allowing the Doctor and Clara to escape. The doctor goes back in time when he left little Davros, and this time saves him, teaching him a lesson on the importance of mercy.

In the series “The Girl Who Died, ” the Doctor and Clara had the misfortune of being in a Viking village in the midst of an attack from the alien military race of the Mayrs. Together, they manage to repel the attack and drive the invaders away once and for all, but they can’t do without losses in the face of the young girl of Eshilda. The doctor recalls the events of the distant past and concludes that he subconsciously chose his present face as a reminder that saving people is his job. In a fit of emotion, he decides to resurrect Aeschildus with the help of myra technology. The paths of the Doctor and Eschilda again intersect in the episode "The Woman Who Survived ". The doctor bitterly learns about what the girl had to go through for hundreds of years of a lonely existence, presented by immortality. During the events of the series, thanks to Dr. Eschilda comes to his senses and decides from now on to look after those whom he leaves behind in his adventures.

In the episode " See the Crow ", Doctor and Clara are asked for help by their old friend from the Rigsey Plane series. The investigation leads them to a secret street in London, which serves as a home for alien refugees from all over the galaxy. None other than Aeschilda rules her. She made a deal with the lords of the time and tweaked the whole situation with Rigsey to trap the Doctor. Clara dies, trying to help a friend, and the Doctors are imprisoned in his own confessional disk, where he is vigilantly haunted by a creature from an old nightmare to knock out the truth about the ancient prophecy of the lords of the time. Overcoming torture, after 4.5 billion years the Doctor gets out of the disk and discovers that he is on his home planet Gallifrey . He drives away President Rassilon and uses the technology of his compatriots to save Clara by pulling his girlfriend from the last moments of her life. The doctor steals one of the local TARDIS and, together with Clara, goes to the very end of the universe, hoping to deceive death forever. There he meets Aeschilda, who tells him that the Hybrid from the prophecy of the lords of the time may well be the Doctor and Clara, who have a dangerous influence on each other. Having realized this, the Doctor is going to erase Clara’s memory of him and leave her somewhere in a safe place. Clara insists that the Doctor has no right to deprive her of the most precious memories in her life, and then he agrees to rely on chance and use the device at the same time, not knowing who it will work on. As a result, it is the Doctor who loses his memories of Clara. The girl leaves the Doctor on Earth and returns his TARDIS to him, and she flies away with Eschilda in a stolen time machine, one day to return to Gallifrey and meet her end.

After this, for the first time in this incarnation, the Doctor meets his wife River Song . During a dizzying adventure, the couple confesses to each other in unexpressed feelings. Having suffered a crash in Darryllium, the Doctor understands that the time has come to stop running and to realize what the future version of River told him about in the series “ Silence in the Library ”. He gives his wife a sound screwdriver and arranges her a perfect farewell meeting with him for 24 years, knowing that it will be their last time spent together before her death. After the events on Darryllium, the Doctor, in order not to feel lonely, decides to take River Assistant, Nardol , into his companions. Returning to Earth, they manage to uncover the Pack of Harmony plan to take over the world and prevent the destruction of New York .

The Path of Atonement

By the beginning of the tenth season, the Doctor has been living and working undercover as a professor at St. Luke University in Bristol for about 70 years. He took an oath to protect the Vault located on the territory of the educational institution. In the Pilot series, the Doctor meets a girl named Bill Potts , who works in the university canteen where he teaches. Noticing that she attends all of his lectures, the time lord offers to become her personal mentor, and she happily agrees. After a few months, they have to face an extraterrestrial threat, and then the girl reveals the true nature of her professor. After that, Doctor and Bill begin to travel together.

In the Oxygen series, the Doctor yearning for travels decides to go somewhere with Bill and Nardol and responds to the alarm coming from the space station in the future. During this adventure, the Doctor loses his sight after spending too long in open space without proper protection when trying to save Bill's life. The doctor hides that his vision has not returned, and again begins to wear his own sound glasses, with which he is able to distinguish the outlines of objects. In " Extremis " it turns out that Nardol helps the Doctor on the orders of the River Song, and in the mysterious Vault is Missy, whom the time lord saved from execution and vowed to protect for thousands of years. Also in the episode, the Doctor receives a message from his virtual copy that the monks alien race is going to take over the Earth. Indeed, in the series “ Pyramid at the End of the World ”, the Doctor is asked for help in the fight against alien invasion. He almost manages to defeat them, but the Doctor is in mortal danger due to lost vision. Then Bill agrees to surrender the planet to the Monks in exchange for the life and vision of his friend. The doctor, Bill and Nardol are separately, and the Earth for six months falls under the oppressive regime of aliens. In the episode " Position ", three friends reunite and strike a stronghold of the Monks together, driving the alien invaders away, and the life of earthlings returns to its usual course. Missy also contributes to the fight against the Monks, whose information has become the key to defeating them. This and several subsequent adventures begin to convince the Doctor that Missy, for all those decades spent with him, has really changed for the better, and maybe they will again be able to become friends.

In the series “ Be Eternal Our Lives, ” the well-intentioned Doctor decides to give Missy a chance and see how she behaves in a particular situation. To do this, he chooses an alarm, which sends a colonists spaceship falling into a black hole . However, the plan of the time lord collapses when Bill is injured with a pistol, and then taken to the lower level of the ship. When the Doctor manages to get to his companion, it turns out that ten years have passed below due to the effect of relativistic time dilation , and Bill was turned into a cyberman. There, the Doctor encounters the previous incarnation of Missy, the Master. At the end of the Fall of the Doctor season, Missy and the Master take the Doctor prisoner, and trying to escape, he is mortally wounded by an electric discharge, which was attacked by a cyberman. The heroes manage to leave the floor and rise higher, reaching the deck with a solar farm. However, the army of cybermen is still advancing, and the Doctor is trying to convince Missy to go to his side, but is failing, because, at first glance, she succumbed to the bad influence of her previous incarnation. Later it turns out that it was a hoax, and Missy really changed and was going to help him, eliminating the Master and dying at the same time, which the Doctor does not suspect. The time lord instructs Nardol to lead the evacuation of the inhabitants of the farm, and he, along with Bill, remains to repel the cybermen. In the process, the Doctor blows up the entire floor of the ship and dies, destroying many cybermen along with him. His body is found and delivered aboard the TARDIS Bill, to which her usual appearance returned due to the intervention of the object of her sympathies Heather, whom they had previously encountered at the beginning of the season. Bill says goodbye to the Doctor, not knowing that thanks to her, a particle of life has returned to the body of the time lord. The doctor comes to his senses, but his companion's abilities are not enough to heal him from fatal injuries, and then his own physiology takes effect. The regeneration process begins, but the Doctor refuses to complete it, leaves the TARDIS and meets his first incarnation outside ( David Bradley ), who is also in the same mood at the end of his life .

After that, time stops and two Doctors meet the British captain of the First World War era. They are delivered to the Hall of the Dead on a spaceship whose pilot, calling himself a Certificate, explains that the captain was accidentally moved from the moment of his death and should return there. After meeting with Bill, the Doctor searches for Rzhavik , a rebel far away who was once served , with whose help he finds out that the Testimony comes from a distant future, and his goal is to harmlessly record the memories of the dead. It also becomes clear that the time flow error associated with the captain was caused by a paradox when two Doctors prepared to die at the same time and place. Doctors return the captain, who turns out to be the ancestor of Team Leader Lethbridge Stewart , at the time of his death. But the Twelfth Doctor moved the time frame by a couple of hours at the very beginning of the Christmas truce , thus saving the captain's life. After that, the First Doctor leaves to meet his fate, and Bill restores the memories of the Twelfth Doctor about Clara, finally takes the form of Nardol, and then disappears. Ready for its regeneration, the Twelfth Doctor advises his future incarnation to "laugh heartily, quickly run and do good" and turns into the Thirteenth Doctor .

Personality

Costume of the Twelfth Doctor at Doctor Who Experience

The Twelfth Doctor was originally dressed in a dark blue Crombie coat with a red lining, dark blue trousers, a tightly buttoned white shirt and heavy black Loake boots. During the season, he wears several more shirts, including black, burgundy, black and white polka dots, as well as a holey black jumper, which belongs to Capaldi himself. Sometimes a dark blue cardigan or vest is added to the shirts. The costume designer of the series Howard Burden took part in the creation of the image. Peter Capaldi said his costume symbolizes the rebellion of the Time Lord. The executive producer of the series, Stephen Moffat, added that “the monsters of the entire Universe should start to be afraid of the new Doctor” [14] . Arsen Wenger , head coach of the London Arsenal, seems to be dressing [15] .

Starting with the series “ Last Christmas ”, the Doctor sometimes appears in a black sweatshirt with a zipper (first flashed in the episode “ Heist in Time ”), worn on a jumper. In the ninth season, his appearance becomes even more informal: strict classics are replaced by torn t-shirts and checked trousers, as well as Ray-Ban sunglasses (which are sonic). In the Begin the Crow series, the Doctor begins to wear a burgundy velvet version of his standard Crombie with a black vest and black pants. In the season finale, he receives from TARDIS a new sound screwdriver with a blue-gold case, which has six color modes: blue, ripple blue, green, ripple green, red and white. In the special issue, “The Return of Doctor Mysterio, ” the Doctor is dressed in another new coat - now in black velvet with plum lining.

In the tenth season, the Doctor’s costume is undergoing changes again: now he combines classic and informal style, putting on a sweatshirt on his shirt, and his coat is replaced by a black velvet frock coat, the lining of which instead of the iconic scarlet shade has turned blue. By the end of the season, the Doctor returns to a Crombie-style coat with a red lining, but the material remains the same - black velvet.

Character

The Twelfth Doctor is more alien, for the first time in a long time. He appears as reasonable, harsh and unceremonious, but still kind and fearless, striving to save lives. He is less selfish because he simply prefers to do his job, not seeking approval and not caring whether those whom he is trying to save consider him a hero. He often ignores it when he is accused of heartlessness, as he seeks to focus on thoughts and come up with another plan of salvation. Mark Gaitiss compared him to the Third and Fourth Doctors and described him as a “more dangerous, more impatient Doctor. There is a crazy side to it ” [16] . Stephen Moffat added that the Twelfth Doctor has an amazing ability for sparkling humor, which is largely based on the fact that sometimes he behaves terribly rude [17] . The showrunner also said that despite struggling with emotions, Kapaldi presented the series with the most emotional Doctor [18] . Peter Capaldi stated that he was trying to embody everyone else in his Doctor, and that his Doctor was still “funny, passionate, vibrant and fearless.” Jenna Coleman also added that this time the Doctor is more “mysterious, mysterious, complex and ill-mannered” [19] . The chemistry between Kapaldi and Coleman is described as "incinerating" [20] . Regarding the feelings that Clara has for the Doctor, Coleman stated that “she is unconditionally in love with him and has always been. He is her hero, but she hardly admits this to him. They rarely talk to each other about their love, tend to keep everything under the surface. " Peter Capaldi described the relationship between the Doctor and Clara as “truly romantic.” However, they prefer not to talk about emotional things, so much remains hidden. The whole thing is unspoken between them; it’s much more interesting to work with it, instead of following the laws of a typical romantic genre [21] .

Casting

Peter Capaldi plays the Twelfth Doctor

On June 1, 2013, it was announced that Matt Smith would resign from the permanent composition of Doctor Who, and in the 2013 Christmas special issue, the Doctor would regenerate [8] [22] [23] . The showrunner [24] of the series, Stephen Moffat, stated that the time of Matt Smith's replacement was very important for the future series [25] . Smith 's announcement of his departure caused a lot of speculation in the media about who will be the next, Twelfth Doctor [26] [27] [28] .

There were rumors that a new Doctor could be played by a woman. Among the candidates were Helen Mirren [29] and Katherine Kelly [30] . Matt Smith and John Barrowman , who plays Jack Harkness in the television series and his spin-off Torchwood , supported the idea of a female Doctor [31] [32] [33] .

John Hurt played the “Military Doctor” [25] - the incarnation that participated in the Time War , which was between the Eighth Doctor and the Ninth Doctor [34] , which makes the Twelfth Doctor practically the thirteenth, and the “natural” incarnations of the Time Lords are only thirteen [ 35] . However, the regeneration of the Tenth Doctor was taken into account when he spent energy, but did not change his appearance. Thus, the Twelfth Doctor is the result of the thirteenth regeneration as a whole and the first in a new regeneration cycle presented to the Doctor by the Time Lords [36] .

Colin Baker (who played the role of the Sixth Doctor ) supported the candidacy of John Coolshaw [37] .

Possible candidates for the role of the Twelfth Doctor were Rupert Grint [38] , Reese Ahmed [39] , Rory Kinnear [40] [41] [42] , Ben Daniels [43] , Julian Rind-Tutt [44] , Russell Tovey , Chris Addison , Chiwetel Ejiofor [45] , Peter Capaldi , Ben Wishaw , David Herwood , Idris Elba , and Damien Moloni [46] .

The incredible assumption was that the Twelfth Doctor would be played by Prince Charles , who, along with his wife Camilla , visited a film set in Cardiff in early July 2013 [47] [48] .

On August 3, 2013, William Hill betting company bet on the fact that Kapaldi is the favorite for the role with a probability of 5 out of 6 [49] .

Smith's successor was introduced on August 4, 2013 [50] at 19:00 British time [51] in a special program by Zoe Bell [52] called Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor [53] . The live show was watched by an average of 6.27 million viewers in the UK; simultaneous broadcasting also took place in the United States of America, Canada and Australia [54] . Stephen Moffat stated that no casting was held, and Capaldi was the only contender for the role. [55]

Peter Capaldi was positively received by fans of the series, and he is a fan of the show from the very beginning. He was also the first person to congratulate Matt Smith on the release of the first season with his participation, and praised him for his acting work [56] .

On January 30, 2017, in an interview on BBC2 radio, Peter Capaldi announced that the tenth season of the series would be his last. The final series with his participation will be the Christmas special issue of 2017 [12] .
