Story
The film takes place in Japan in 1885 . The main character Kikunosuke Onoe (the debut in the movie of the theater actor Setaro Hanayagi ) is the adopted son of the famous actor of the kabuki theater, teaching him professional skills, so that he later becomes his successor and continuer of the acting dynasty. Many praise Onoe, but in his absence they just laugh at him, because the level of his game is low (so does Onoe himself). Otoku (Kakuro Mori), the young nanny of Onoe’s younger brother, is the only one who speaks about his shortcomings in his face, while urging him to try in teaching. When she is fired because of rumors about a relationship with Kikunosuke, Onoe is outraged and leaves the family to her father’s great indignation. He decides to hone his acting skills outside of Tokyo and leaves for Osaka .
A year later, Otoku reunites with Onoe and becomes his common-law wife . Soon after, the leading actor of the local theater, who patronized him, dies, as a result of which he remains without work and joins the wandering theater, in which he travels with his wife for four years. When Onoe has a chance to join the troupe of the Tokyo theater , Otoku secretly asks her friends from Onoe to give him the opportunity to perform on stage, assuring him that he began to play better, and promising to break off relations with him for the sake of reconciling Kikunosuke with his father. After a successful performance, she leaves him. While on tour in Osaka, Onoe learns that she is in the city and is seriously ill, and he needs to see her at parting. Onoe’s father, having heard about this, releases his son, recognizing Otoku as his wife. Soon after this meeting, when the whole city honors Onoe as a great actor, Otoku dies of tuberculosis .
