Ostrog (monastery in Montenegro)

Ostrog ( Montenegrin. Ostrog ) is a functioning Serbian Orthodox monastery in Montenegro , located in the mountains 15 km from the city of Danilovgrad , at an altitude of about 900 m above sea level. It was founded in the 17th century . The relics of its founder, St. Basil of Ostrog , the miracle worker who died on April 29 (May 9), 1671, are stored in the monastery. Currently, 12 monks live in the monastery.

The jail consists of two parts. The lower monastery was founded in the middle of the XIX century, it consists of cells and the Church of the Holy Trinity. The relics of St. the new martyr Stanko, a 12-year-old boy to whom the Turks cut off the hands in which he held the Holy Cross and did not want to let him go.

The Upper Monastery is separated from the Lower by a road about 5 kilometers long, passing through the forest. However, pilgrims on foot usually use a shorter pedestrian road that can be covered in 20-25 minutes. The upper part is built into a rocky niche at an altitude of 900 m above sea level, it is two-level, and there are the most important sights of the monastery. This part of the complex consists of two small churches: Holy Cross Exaltation (1665) and Vvedenskaya (XVII century).

Vvedenskaya church is a very small church, 3 by 3 meters, located just above the Holy Cross Exaltation Church. It was in the Vvedensky church that St. Basil spent 15 years in prayer. On the rock - an image-icon of St. Basil of Ostrog. The ark with the miraculous relics of St. Basil of Ostrog , as well as a prayer book of 1732 and temple candlesticks dating from 1779 are kept in the reliquary of the Vvedensky church.

The monastery is located about 30 km west of Podgorica , at the foot of the cliff Ostroška greda, 8 km from the road connecting the cities of Podgorica and Niksic . The old mountain road connects Ostrog with Herzegovina and Niksic on the Tsarev Bridge over the Zeta River. On the southern coast of the Zetas, this road is protected by the ancient castle of Pandurica . You can get to the monastery by regular bus from Niksic or Podgorica or by car. The road is very narrow and difficult in some places.
