Biography
Giles Manby was born in 1813 in York in the family of solicitor James Manby. He studied at a school in York, then worked as an assistant to the surgeon Brown, took part in the treatment of patients during the 1832 cholera epidemic.
Manby studied at the medical school of the University of Edinburgh , attended lectures by Professor Robert Graham . Since 1835 he studied in Paris with Adrien Jussieux and his assistants Guillain and Decken , received a doctorate in medicine in Montpellier .
In 1838, Manby settled in Saint-Bertrand de Commenges , but already in 1839 he moved to Algeria . In 1844, Giles married Jane Wellsford and began to live near the city of Oran , but in 1859 he returned to Montpellier. In 1860, Jane died, and Manby returned to the UK, two years later he married Elise Bakeridge.
On April 12, 1876, Giles Manby died of pneumonia.
Giles Manby was one of the founding members of the Edinburgh Botanical Society.
The main herbarium of Cortals was transferred to Leiden University (L).
