The station was opened on July 1, 1977 .
The opening of the station was combined with the completion of the construction of a 19.0 km railway line connecting the National Airport and the RFK Stadium and the opening of the stations Arlington Cemetery , Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport , Eastern Market , Crystal City , L'Enfant Plaza , Mack Ferson Square , Pentagon , Pentagon City , Potomac Avenue , Rosslyn , Smithsonian , Stadium Armery , Farragut West , Federal Center South West , Federal Triangle and Foggy Bottom - TWE [2] . The orange line has been serving the station since its opening on November 20, 1978 [3] . The opening of the Silver Line is scheduled for 2013 [4] .
