History
XIX century
The hospital was founded in 1844 by a private charity, chaired by the Russian military and statesman F.F. Berg . The establishment of the hospital was supremely authorized on October 13 (25), 1844 [1] . In accordance with the decree of Nicholas I of March 8 (20), 1845 [2], the hospital got its name in honor of the late Grand Duchess Elizabeth Mikhailovna . Nicholas I took the hospital under his protection and appointed her as the main trustee, Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna [3] . After the death of Elena Pavlovna in 1873, Grand Duchess Ekaterina Mikhailovna became the main trustee.
The hospital was opened in the adapted building of the former house of the mayor Ivan Fedorovich Zherbin on Mikhailovskaya Square (now Arts Square , Building 2) [4] , where the “Russian Museum” of P. P. Svinin was located before [5] . Ernst (Julius) Aleksandrovich (Yakovlevich) Meyer (1810-1872) [6] [7] [8] was appointed the chief physician. Here the hospital was located until 1848.
Then, until 1862, it was located in the house number 2 on the street of the 10th company of the Izmailovsky regiment . The chief physician during these years was the doctor of medicine von Waxmann Theobald Adolf (Fyodor Karlovich) (1822-1868) [9] .
In 1862, due to the emergency state of the building, the hospital was temporarily closed, and until 1871, sick children were sent to the Holy Cross Exaltation Community of Sisters of Charity .
On May 21 (June 2), 1871, a new building was consecrated and opened on the embankment of the Fontanka River, in house 146 near Kalinkin Bridge [10] (152-A according to modern numbering).
