Biography
John Joe Nevin was born on June 7, 1989 in the town of Mullingar , County Westmeath , in a family of so-called Irish travelers [1] . He began to actively engage in boxing at an early age; he was trained at the Kevan amateur boxing club with coach Brian McKeon. He achieved the first serious success in the ring in 2006, when he won the junior championship of Great Britain and visited the World Junior Championships, where he finished fifth. A year later, he was fifth in the European Union Youth Championship in Warsaw, a year later he made his debut in the adult championship, immediately winning the gold medal in lightweight weight, and thanks to a series of successful performances, he won the right to defend the honor of the country at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing - in the first won the tournament in a confident victory, but in the second with a crushing score of 2: 9, he lost to Mongol Enkhbatyn Badar-Uugan , who eventually became an Olympic champion.
In 2009, Nevin took part in the World Championships in Milan, lost to Russian Eduard Abzalimov at the semifinals stage and received a bronze medal. The following season, he traveled to the world championship to Moscow, but acted extremely unsuccessfully, taking only fifth place. At the 2011 European Championships in Ankara, at the quarter-finals stage, he lost to Russian boxer Dmitry Polyansky , while at the World Championships in Baku he was more successful and won a bronze medal - this is the first time in Irish boxing history when one athlete managed to win two world medals in world championships.
Season 2012, John Nevin started with another victory in the Irish Championship (fifth in a row), confirming his leadership in the lightest weight category, he passed the selection for the Olympic Games in London - managed to reach the final here, but lost in the decisive match with a score of 11:14 Briton Luke Campbell , his eternal rival in many international tournaments [2] . After receiving a silver Olympic medal, Nevin announced his intention to become a professional, but soon changed his mind and signed a contract with the British Lionharts team in the semi-professional WSB league [3] . In 2013, the Irishman remains one of the best lightweight boxers in the world, in particular, at the European Championship in Minsk, he confidently won the gold medal.
