Elfriede Gerstl ( him. Elfriede Gerstl ); June 16, 1932 , Vienna - April 9, 2009 , ibid.) - Austrian writer, poet of Jewish origin. Winner of the Erich Fried Prize ( 1999 ) and the Georg Trakl Prize.

Biography

Born in the family of a dentist. Holocaust Victim. During the Second World War, together with his mother, she was hiding from the persecution of the Nazis, miraculously avoided being sent to a concentration camp .

After the war, she studied medicine and psychology at the University of Vienna , but graduated after the birth of her daughter.

In 1963, E. Gerstl moved to West Berlin , received a scholarship from Literarisches Colloquium Berlin . She lived in West Berlin until 1972, after which she returned to Vienna.

Creativity

In the 1950s she became involved in literary activities. In 1955 he published his first work in the journal Neue Wege (New Ways). In 1962, the first collection of poems and short stories “Gesellschaftsspiele mit mir” was published .

Living in Berlin, in the years 1968-1969, wrote the novel Spielräume , which was published only in 1977.

E. Gerstl - author of literary works of various genres, wrote poems, essays and stories, which raised issues of feminism, gender policy. Despite the tragic experience of her life, she did not lose the ability to write in an easy and witty manner until the end of her life. According to the Austrian Minister of Culture Claudia Schmid, E. Gerstl made an important contribution to the development of German-language literature.

Was friends with the Austrian novelist, winner of the 2004 Nobel Prize for literature, Elfrida Jelinek , is the author of her literary biography.
