Biography
After the death of his father in 1173, Richard inherited rich possessions in the Welsh mark , as well as the titles of Earl of Hartford and Lord de Clair and de Tonbridge.
Around 1180, Richard married Amicia, the second daughter of William Fitz-Robert , 2nd Earl of Gloucester . From this marriage, which in the future provided the heirs of Richard the title of Earls of Gloucester, three children were born, but later the pope forced Richard to divorce his wife because of close blood relationship. Amicia was later recognized as Countess of Gloucester.
Richard attended the coronation of Kings Richard I (1189) and John Landless (1199).
During the baronial rebellion against King John Landless, Richard joined the rebels. As a result, the castle belonging to Richard Tonbridge was taken by the royal army. Later, Richard and his son were one of the 25 commissioners elected on November 9, 2015 to implement the provisions of the Magna Carta .
Richard died in 1217, he was succeeded by his only son Gilbert .
